Frequently asked questions

How does Loam figure out if trails are rideable?
Loam combines the last 7 days of rainfall from Open-Meteo weather data with your local soil type (from USDA Web Soil Survey), terrain slope, and evaporation rates. The result is an estimated soil moisture level — Prime means the dirt is in good shape, Soggy means too wet, Dusty means very dry.
Why doesn't my local trail system appear?
We currently cover 750+ trail networks across the US, but we're always expanding. Use the Request feature in the app (Explore tab → "Request a network") to let us know what's missing. We review requests and add missing areas regularly.
The conditions seem wrong — trails were dry but Loam said Soggy.
Conditions are modeled from weather station data, which can vary from trail-level reality. Factors like tree canopy, aspect, and local drainage aren't captured in the model. The thumbs up/down buttons in the app help us improve — use them! Your feedback is reviewed in our weekly digest.
How do alerts work?
Go to a trail network's detail screen and tap the bell icon. Loam will send you a push notification when conditions at that network change to Prime. You can manage your watched networks in the Alerts tab. Uninstalling the app cancels all alerts.
What does Loam Pro include?
Loam Pro removes ads, unlocks condition alerts for unlimited networks, and supports continued development of the app. It's available as a monthly or annual subscription, managed through your Apple ID. You can cancel anytime from Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions.
How do I cancel my Pro subscription?
Open the iOS Settings app → tap your name → Subscriptions → Loam → Cancel Subscription. Alternatively: App Store → your profile icon → Subscriptions. Your access continues until the end of the billing period.
What data does Loam collect?
Only your approximate location (to find nearby trails, never stored on our servers) and your device push token if you enable alerts. No account required. See our full Privacy Policy.
